October 2008 Entries

Took them long enough.

I'm trying out the new Firefox 3.1 betas, and noticed this while reading Antony's blog: Antony's blog has featured CSS3 drop shadows for quite some time now, and if I'm not mistaken, even Konqueror 2 running on my Mandrake 8 (ca. 2001) machine could render them. Seems like the Mozilla guys only recently implemented this particular functionality of CSS3, which I have to say is pretty long overdue at this point. In all honesty, I have to wonder if the internal politics of the Mozilla development hierarchy are becoming inefficient now that they've gone commercial...

It's me in Mii form.

Yesterday, Antony showed me a Mii version of me, created using the Mii Channel on his Nintendo Wii. I can't say I've ever seen myself in Mii form, so I'd say this is pretty cool. Thanks!

Productivity

I currently have on my left monitor an essay due tomorrow in Language and Composition, and on the right monitor an in-progress Java implementation of the game Mastermind due on Friday. A good way to stimulate both sides of the brain at once, perhaps?

My college entrance essay...

...contains references to GNU, Mozilla.org, Netscape, NCSA Mosaic, The Great Firewall of China, Comcast, and RealNetworks. Should I scrap it and try harder to not let the "open-source extremist" in me show?

Storage space in 2018?

Slashdot has an interesting poll up: how much storage space will you need in 2018? Now that many people have well surpassed the 100GB mark, here are some extrapolations I've made. In 1998, I was using a Compaq 486 with a 120 megabyte hard drive, which if I recall was brimming full when I quit using it. I had a box of fifty or so floppies that contained homework, so 50 * 1.44mb = 72mb. I can't remember if I had purchased my EIDEMax controller card and CD drive yet, but assuming that I had, I owned three data CDs. (For...

More screen-related issues.

How would you like to stare at these colored lines all day? I don't know exactly where they're originating. I used a pair of binoculars to zoom in on the affected pixels to figure out exactly what's going on screen-side. It turns out that the yellow bar is generated by the red and green subpixels for that column being stuck in the on position. The blue bar, as you may have guessed, is caused by the blue subpixels being stuck. Blue in the first bar and red and green in the second work as expected, so if I display pure white,...

Excuses

Fifteen witty and inappropriate excuses I've given recently to people telling me to get a MySpace/Facebook: "Alternatively I could flush my college application down the toilet." "Get a job." "I don't even know Tom." "I can name fifty more productive things to do." "I'm not a conformist." "I value my privacy too much to do that." "Your concept of fun differs radically from mine." "I have a blog; that's enough for me." "I'm...

Suggestions for importing vinyl LPs?

I've been trying to import some old Led Zeppelin LPs for a few days now, and so far I haven't managed to get a decent reproduction of any of them. Problems are such: The built-in amplifier on my receiver causes tracks to clip too much while being imported, so I have the Monitor switch thrown to bypass it. As a result this causes the sound quality to become too tinny, and turning down the treble setting doesn't help. Stereo sound is heard over the speakers hooked up to the receiver, but the result waveform...
